At a time when international taste was fascinated by metal-tube lamps with halogen bulbs and cold light sources, we wanted to champion warmth through the Basic lamp. This meant a return to natural materials such as wood, stitched cardboard, and ribbons. The aesthetic championed challenged the dominant taste of the time because it supported a more artisanal and relatable modernity, and ultimately fueled Santa & Cole's international expansion, fostering an alternative movement in Europe. The Basic lamp continues to uphold these premises thirty-five years later. A wooden cylinder, supported by a heavy metal base of the same diameter, finished in bronze or nickel, holds a variety of shades in various shapes and colors, eight in total. And although the balance is already very good, it can be improved with an optional, wider lower base for use in communities.
