Mario Botta was born in 1943 in Mendrisio, Switzerland. His work was inspired by masters such as Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahn, and Carlo Scarpa, whom he met during his studies in Venice. Architecture and memory are inseparable in his work, where the changes implemented in architecture are integrated into the human landscape. Light generates space; primary geometric forms are distinctive signs that humankind has left in their environment. From his first single-family houses in the canton of Ticino, his work encompassed all types of buildings (schools, banks, administrative buildings, libraries, museums, and religious buildings), as well as design.
